COVINGTON, Wash. -- A couple trying to walk into Walmart for Thanksgiving night deals were struck by a suspected drunk driver instead, according to Sgt. Cindi West with the King County Sheriff's Office. It happened in the store's parking lot on Southeast 270th Place in Covington.
Denise Thompson witnessed the accident.
"The sound was horrific. I will never forget it," said Thompson. "Everybody was screaming and yelling. It was really chaotic."
Thompson did not see anyone rushing to help, and that is when she decided she could not stand by and watch.
Thompson's niece, Sabrina Rogers, called 911, while Thompson focused on the female victim.
"I didn't know if she was even alive when I ran over there," said Thompson.
Thompson found the woman's hair caught under the tire of the SUV, and she was bleeding from a gash on her head.
"I just though I need to help her, and I need to keep her awake until paramedics get here. That's what I did," said Thompson.
The woman was airlifted to Harborview with serious injuries. The woman's boyfriend was hit too, but he was in better condition.
Sgt. West said a 71-year-old man was behind the wheel of the SUV that collided with the couple. Deputies said it appeared the driver was drunk.
"We do suspect alcohol. They said they smelled it. There was behavior consistent with alcohol impairment," said Sgt. West.
Investigators are waiting on toxicology results for the driver. He's under investigation for vehicular assault.
