The Snohomish High School football player with Down syndrome who became an internet sensation in 2010 has been fighting for his life after coming down with pneumonia.

Ike Ditzenberger was admitted to the ICU at the University of Washington Medical Center on October 22, his family says on a CaringBridge web page for Ike.

The 19-year-old had severe pneumonia and was having trouble breathing.  He was put on a ventilator on Oct. 23 and was given strong antibiotics and sedatives.

His family asked for prayers for Ike.

On Thursday, they reported that an x-ray revealed that the pneumonia was clearing, and on Saturday he was taken off the ventilator and was breathing on his own.

The family reports that nurses are amazed at how strong Ike is.

"Those workouts with the football and wrestling teams have given him the nickname 'The Incredible Hulk' in the ICU," Ike's family says via their CaringBridge page.

As a 17-year-old junior at Snohomish High School, Ike had the experience of a lifetime when he scored a 51-yard touchdown in a game between Snohomish and rival Lake Stevens.

The video of the touchdown went viral, with more than 2.7 million views on YouTube.
