PORTLAND - Heat exhaustion is a big concern -- especially for pets as temperatures rise this week.

For animals in the heat, veterinarians said pet owners should make sure the animals have plenty of water and to keep an eye out for heat stroke and sunburn.

They said given the choice of keeping a pet outside during the heat wave or inside a building - even without air conditioning - animals would fare better inside, in most cases.

They also advised pet owners not to play too much with their furry friends in the heat, if possible.
