ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Two wolves suspected of killing a teacher outside the rural Alaska village of Chignik Lake did not have rabies.
The Alaska Department of Health and Social Services announced the results Thursday.
The animals were shot Monday from the air by the state Department of Fish & Game.
Department officials say the wolves matched descriptions of those seen at the site where Candice Berner, a 32-year-old Perryville teacher, was killed while jogging last week.
The wolves were examined by the state wildlife veterinarian and by microbiologists at the Alaska State Virology Laboratory.
A hunt for additional wolves was called off.
Chignik Lake is on the Alaska Peninsula.
