McLEAN, Va. (AP) — A week after two news outlets mistakenly identified a Stafford, Va., man as the Washington Navy Yard shooter, Rollie Chance is still trying to set the record straight.

He's also grieving. One of the 12 killed was a personal friend.

NBC News and CBS News mistakenly reported in the immediate aftermath of the Sept. 16 attack that Chance was the Navy Yard shooter. The confusion arose because an old ID badge belonging to Chance, who retired from the Navy Yard last year, was found near the shooter.

The reports were retracted within minutes, but for Chance, the damage was done.

Chance's lawyer says he is considering legal action.

NBC News and CBS News said in separate statements that they reported what they learned from sources and immediately corrected the misinformation.
