BLOOMINGTON, Minn. --- The Mall of America, located in the suburbs of Minneapolis, announced to the Associated Press it will be closed on Thanksgiving Day.
The mall told the AP it wants to offer workers time with their families on the holiday, and will reopen at 5 a.m. the day after Thanksgiving.
In Spokane, Riverpark Square Mall confirmed it would be closed on Thanksgiving, as it was last year. Riverpark Square plans to open on Black Friday at 9 a.m.
Both the NorthTown and Spokane Valley malls were open last year, but have not decided what to do this year. Representatives told KREM 2 they will make that decision in the coming weeks.
The movie theaters at all three of the malls will likely remain open on Thanksgiving day.
Mall of America said some of its tenants may choose to be open on Thanksgiving. So it will have security and other key personnel on duty to ensure smooth operations.
The Friday after Thanksgiving had long been the official kickoff to the holiday shopping season. But over the past several years, Thanksgiving has become the new tradition.
