Trucker dies in tanker crash on Highway 58 near Oakridge

OAKRIDGE, Ore. -- A Lakeview truck driver hauling two fuel tankers died Saturday evening after his semi went off the road and caught fire.

Crews were called just after 10:30 p.m. to the crash on Highway 58, about 14 miles northwest of Oakridge.

Investigators said the driver 62-year-old Kevin W. Smith of Lakeview, was headed eastbound and veered off the right shoulder, causing one of the tankers to roll over and ignite.

"The vehicle combination became fully engulfed in flames and information indicates that Smith was unable to exit the vehicle," said Oregon State Police Sgt. Kyle Hove.

Highway 58 was closed for about seven hours while crews put out the fire and investigators assessed the crash scene. The area is northeast of Eugene.

The investigation into the cause of the crash is continuing, Hove said.
