'State of Washington, D.C.' would be D.C.'s state name

WASHINGTON, D.C. –  District of Columbia leaders have come up with a new name for the city in the event it might become a state: State of Washington, D.C.

Not confusing at all, considering there's already a State of Washington on the West Coast.

The D.C. Council on Tuesday voted unanimously to approve the name "State of Washington, D.C" in its push for statehood, rejecting the long-favored name of New Columbia.

The new D.C. would stand for "Douglass Commonwealth" instead of "District of Columbia," in honor of abolitionist Frederick Douglass, who lived in the area in the 1800s.

City residents will vote on the proposed state constitution with the new name in November. If approved, city leaders will present it to Congress.

The effort, however, remains a long shot with nearly all Republicans in Congress opposed to statehood for the District.
