Spokane homeowner detains robbery suspect

SPOKANE, Wash. – A Spokane homeowner detained a robbery suspect Tuesday night while waiting for police to arrive.

Just before 10:00 p.m., Spokane Police responded to the area of West 29th Avenue and South Howard Street on what was initially reported as an occupied residential burglary. The homeowner was reportedly in a physical altercation with the suspect who was armed with a gun.

The suspect was later identified as 35-year-old Samual A. Clopton.

The female homeowner noticed a light was on inside her vehicle. She went to her vehicle to turn off the light and discovered a man inside.

The female victim called for her husband who attempted to detain the suspect while she quickly called 911. The suspect ran from the vehicle with the victims following.

The victims were able to catch up to the suspect and attempted to detain him again until police arrived. According to police, the suspect produced a realistic looking replica handgun and was disarmed by victims.

Officers arrived shortly after and detained the suspect.

Clopton was transported to an area hospital for treatment of minor injuries and was later booked into the Spokane County Jail for one count of First Degree Robbery.
