Local woman tries to stop car thief by jumping on hood

SPOKANE, Wash. – A woman was injured Wednesday when she jumped on the roof of her car in an attempt to stop a man from stealing it.

Court documents said police were called to an apartment complex on East Westview Court around 2:20 p.m. Witnesses said they saw a man, later identified as Lico McKinnie, jump down from a second story apartment into the parking lot. Then, they heard a woman screaming for help and saw the victim holding on to the hood of her car. Witnesses said McKinnie continued to drive recklessly at a high rate of speed and was swerving in an attempt to throw the victim from the car.

"She was struggling and she was screaming out the whole entire parking lot. So, the whole time she's screaming, a deadly scream and he's just going. He didn't care," said witness Melissa Williams.

Williams said she called 911 before witnessing McKinnie steal her neighbor's car.

"He was throwing clothes, and taking off his shirt and ripping it and just kind of asking people to use their phones," said Williams.

One witness saw the victim fly off the car and McKinnie drove off as the witness went to go help the woman. The woman told the man she couldn’t feel her leg. Court records said the victim suffered extreme road rash to the left side of her body, including her face and shoulder.

Police later learned that McKinnie had gotten into an argument with his daughter’s mother and she had locked him out on the patio of her apartment. Officials said he asked somebody to use their phone and he called for a ride, but that person refused pick him up.But instead of calling a taxi, police said McKinnie hopped in the car when the woman stopped to get her mail and throw out her garbage.

"The woman was taking out her trash and she left her car going and the door was open and he ran in it. So I was screaming like, 'Get out of her car, Oh my God,'" said Williams.

Court documents said police later caught up with McKinnie after he crashed the stolen car at Highway 2 and Mount Spokane Park Drive.  He was arrested for theft of a motor vehicle and assault second degree. Police said McKinnie told them he forgot about the woman on the hood of the car and he was so high he could not recall what happened. The woman's car was totalled.
