Kalispel Tribe Police stay busy at Northern Quest

AIRWAY HEIGHTS,Wash.---Many arrests have happened at Northern Quest casino throughout the years but tribal police said this is not a bad area by any means.

Kalispel Tribe Police want people to know that whenever you get thousands of people in one area, crime is bound to happen.

“Everything that the city police deals with we deal with it here,” said Officer Bret Pierson.

There is a stark contrast between the amount of officers employed in the area compared to the amount of people who visit the casino.

Only 14 officers work on the Kalispel reservation and of those, only nine of them work at the casino.

"There's thousands of people that go through this place everyday and if we're not right here, things go from zero to one hundred," Pierson explained.

Security cameras also play a huge part in keeping crime under control at the casino. Recently three people were arrested in connection to drug activity. Police said you can see a guy dropping his stash before kicking it under a car as officers confront him on the footage.

Officers said they also deal with a lot of warrant arrests from criminals using tribal land as a safe haven.

Tribal police also want people to know that whether you are a tribal member or not, Kalispel police have authority from the state and federal government to arrest criminals on tribal land, the city of Airway Heights, Spokane and Pend Oreille County.

“It's our duty to protect our public, our customers and team members to make this a safe environment," said Police Chief James Wynecoop.
