Justin Timberlake and other odd names Spokane voters wrote-in this year

Weird names people wrote in on their ballots this year

SPOKANE, Wash. – From cartoon characters to pop stars, Spokane County Elections Office staff said Thursday they have seen them all when it comes to write-in candidates.

This year’s presidential election was no exception, and we wanted to know what kind of names people actually wrote it in our community.

While there were several choices on the ballot, some Spokane people decided Justin Timberlake – the singer, song writer, dancer – would make a great choice as leader of the free world.

Spokane Co. election staff said Timberlake was a popular write-in choice. We are not sure if it is his boyish charm, or maybe the smooth dance moves?

Timberlake was not alone. Some voted for late-night TV host Jimmy Fallon and even Bill Gates.

“The creativity of the human race is never in doubt if you’ve been down here to elections office and handled ballots,” said Vicky Dalton, Spokane County Auditor.

Some Spokane votes even reached into their childhood memories to make their picks.

Some chose Donald Duck, Mickey Mouse, and Goofy.

Someone even wrote in their dog named Jack.

Was there a name that really stood out to those in the elections office?

“Someone wrote ‘Mercy’," Dalton said.

Okay, so clearly, some people were just happy the election was going to be over.

While it can be fun to look back at some of the creative write-ins in this election cycle, officials said they prefer not to see them.

“Don’t write in a name that actually isn’t a candidate, because it just slows down processing, it takes time,” Dalton said.

So what should you do instead of writing in a candidate?

“Just leave it blank, it accomplishes the same thing,” she said.
