Snowmaking in full swing at Bogus Basin

Snowmaking in full swing at Bogus Basin.

There's not enough snow for the mountain to be open yet, but Bogus Basin officials say with a little bit of artificial help, the mountain could be open very soon.

Bogus Basin acquired two new snowmaking guns, bringing the total to four machines.

“We have been using them at every opportunity since November,” says Brad Wilson, general manager at Bogus Basin.

Supplemented with natural snow, Wilson says the machines might speed up the wait time until opening day, which is predicted to be around December 10.

But some runs may be open sooner.

“We also have the ability to get Coach, our beginner lift, and the Little Terrain Park at Stuart’s Bowl just based on snowmaking as well,” says Wilson.

It is an opportunity that also benefits local ski shops.

“It definitely helps us as far as leasing equipment, people who just need the basics to get them on the slopes,” says co-owner of Greenwood’s Ski Haus, Carrie Gochnour.

“It's definitely a bonus to have those guns. It will help us out tremendously, especially the people who are new to the sport,” says Master Mechanic Doug Laughrin at McU Sports.

Wilson says these two new guns are just the beginning of a plan to make even more snow in the next few years.

“Were working on a whole snowmaking plan that let us open from top to bottom on Deer Point and Morning Star lifts from scratch,” says Wilson.

For now, all skiers and boarders can do is wait.
