SEATTLE -- There were no software programmers or computer companies at this career expo.
At Magnuson Park, it was all about backhoes and boom trucks.
Seattle's construction industry held a career day for 14 high schools, bringing out more than 500 students.
"At many high schools, academics try to steer everyone towards college," said Mark Carr, a local union representative. "Just like trades aren't for everyone, college isn't for everyone."
Students got the chance to operate cranes, backhoes, and other equipment in a hands-on environment.
"If it goes well, I might try to do this as a career," said Hassan, a 17-year-old senior at Middle College High School.
Many local construction industry employers were present, including the City of Seattle.
