PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Parks and Recreation closed all city-owned sports fields through Sunday, Oct. 16, due to saturated conditions and safety concerns.
The closure affects grass fields at PP&R sites, and events the department permitted at Portland Public Schools facilities, according to spokesman Mark Ross. Fields will also be closed for drop-in use.
Synthetic turf fields will remain open.
“Portland Parks and Recreation makes safety its top priority, though we understand some athletes will be disappointed,” Ross said in a news release.
The wet conditions could be a safety hazard, and also hamper maintenance workers’ ability to care for the fields.
PPR staff will evaluate the fields on Monday and decide if the closure needs to continue.
Portland Public Schools also announced that no outside athletics will take place Friday through Sunday. Indoor activities are still on as scheduled.
