Missing South Salem student found dead in Three Sisters Wilderness

Rescuers searching for Salem area teen

SUBLIMITY, Ore. -- A South Salem High School student missing since Sunday was found dead Thursday night in the Three Sisters Wilderness.

Hikers found the body of 18-year-old Trevor Mitchell near Separation Lake, according to the Lane County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies say initial evidence suggests Mitchell committed suicide but they are awaiting an official ruling from the Lane County medical examiner.

Mitchell, who is from Sublimity, was last seen at noon on Sunday, Sept. 11, in Stayton. He was reported missing to the Marion County Sheriff's Office later that evening.

His black, four-door Toyota Corolla was found Tuesday abandoned at the Separation Lake Trailhead. The Lane County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue personnel began searching the surrounding wilderness and trails on foot and horseback that day.

Family members had said Mitchell's sudden disappearance was "extremely uncharacteristic." He was an international baccalaureate honors student at South Salem High School.

The Lane County Sheriff's Office wants to thank Trevor's family and friends, community members, and volunteers who assisted in the search efforts.
