Post Falls officer charged with DUI still employed as patrol officer

POST FALLS, Idaho – A Post Falls Police officer who was arrest for drunk driving back in November is still employed as a patrol officer.

Officer Brenda Knight was originally charged with excessive DUI but was amended to a regular DUI.

Back in November, court records show that Kootenai County deputies responded to an area near Rathdrum for a report of a drunk driver. They found Knight, still in her Jeep, trying to drive out of a ditch. She reportedly smelled of alcohol and had trouble walking once she got out of the car. Her blood alcohol level was just over three times the legal limit, according to court documents.

In January, Knight accepted a plea agreement with prosecutors and pleaded guilty to the amended charge of a standard DUI. As part of that deal, she was given six days in jail, paid $800 fines and was put on probation for a year. In lieu of jail time, Officer Knight completed 16 hours of community service with the Sheriff's labor program. 

At the time of her arrest in November, the Post Falls police chief confirmed that Knight was still employed with the department. He said he could not discuss personnel matters, and did not elaborate if Knight was back on patrol or had been assigned desk duty.

KREM 2 reached out to Post Falls Police asking the same questions again. Friday afternoon, the department's chief confirmed that Knight was still employed by the department as a patrol officer. He did not elaborate further.

According to abbreviated transcripts of Knight's court appearance in January, her lawyer told a judge that Knight has "suffered from employment and suspension within the department." He added that Knight "has been hard on herself." Court records show that Officer Knight also completed an eight-hour alcohol and drug information course.
