Hunter reports accidentally shooting his kids, ages 2 and 4, in truck

SWEET HOME, Ore. -- A 2-year-old boy and a 4-year-old girl were shot by their father while on a hunting trip Monday morning.

Their father, 27-year-old Zack Davis, told 911 dispatchers he accidentally fired his rifle while walking toward his truck, where his three kids, ages 2, 4 and 6, were sitting.

Investigators said Davis called 911 just after 8 a.m. He told dispatchers he was hunting in the area of Green Peter Dam, east of Sweet Home, when he accidentally fired his gun at his truck.

Davis' 2-year-old son was shot in the leg, which caused a fracture, according to Captain Kevin Guilford with the Linn County Sheriff's Office. Medics took the boy by helicopter to Randall Children's Hospital at Legacy Emanuel in Portland, where he is listed in fair condition. Guilford said the boy will survive his injury.

The 4-year-old daughter was also shot in the leg. She was taken to a Corvallis hospital, where she had surgery to remove a metal fragment.

According to police, Davis said he brought his three kids with him Monday morning and left them in his pickup truck when he saw what he thought was a deer, he told investigators. Davis' father was also on the hunting trip. He was not hurt.

Davis' 6-year-old son was not injured.
