CLEARWATER COUNTY, Idaho --- Firefighters put out a wildfire at a campground near Ahsahka, Idaho and arrested a man for arson on Labor Day, authorities said.
According to the Clearwater County Sheriff’s Office, they responded to a brush fire at the Fish and Game boat launch campground near Ahsahka. The flames were burning brush and trees over the hill from the camping area.
Deputies said they spoke to witnesses and determined a man, later identified as Tracy N. Mendenhall, 25, of Culdesac, was responsible. He was arrested and charged with third degree arson.
In a release, deputies said Mendenhall resisted arrest and slammed his head on the patrol car, causing more than $1,000 in damage.
Deputies charged Mendenhall malicious injury to property – for the damage to the car – along with possession of marijuana, possession of paraphernalia, burning in a closed season, and battery along with the third degree arson charge.
The fire was contained and put out by the Orofino Fire Department and Clearwater Potlatch Timber Protection Association.
