Caldwell mayor honored for work with youth

Caldwell Mayor Garrett Nancolas received a big honor today.

Idaho Voices for Children selected Nancolas as its 2016 Children's Champion based on his career in advancing youth-focused policy initiatives like the mayor's youth advisory council, a program which he pioneered and is now widespread.

Nancolas was honored for his work at the annual Children's Champion luncheon at Boise State this afternoon.

"Mayor Nancolas was extremely gracious and emotional about accepting this award. I think because he cares so much about children, to be honored by a children's advocacy association is particularly meaningful to him," said Lauren Necochea, Director of Idaho Voices for Children.

The mayor is also credited with implementing the city of Caldwell's youth master plan, which involves youth in creating initiatives to improve their community and Caldwell Saves 1st -- a financial education program for parents and children.
