Idaho State Patrol investigating St. Maries Police Department

ST. MARIES, Idaho – Idaho State Police confirmed Wednesday that they are investigating the St. Maries Police Department at the agency’s request.

Meanwhile, the Benewah County Sheriff confirmed that St. Maries’ Police Chief and a sergeant resigned three weeks ago. Officials from BCSO said they do not know the reasoning for the resignations. They added that the resignations do not pose any threats to staffing levels or public safety.

Idaho State Police have confirmed that St. Maries Police reached out to them and requested the investigation back on July 11th.

ISP said the investigation includes looking into the department’s evidence room. An ISP spokesperson said in an email, "It does include the evidence room, but other than that we cannot comment on the ongoing investigation."

Since then, the Sheriff’s Office has signed an agreement with the City of St. Maries to temporarily run the police department. The agreement runs for a five year period.
