85-year-old Newberg man killed in Yamhill County crash

NEWBERG, Ore. – An 85-year-old Newberg man was killed in a crash on Highway 99W near Lafayette Wednesday afternoon.

Richard Mitchell was a passenger in a northbound Toyota Prius when a southbound pickup truck pulling a dual axle utility trailer crossed the center line and collided with the Prius, according to Sgt. Kyle Hove of Oregon State Police. The crash occurred shortly before 2 p.m. near Stoller Road, two miles east of Lafayette.

Mitchell was flown to a Portland hospital, where he died from his injuries. The driver of the Prius, 84-year-old Velda Mitchell, was taken to Willamette Valley Medical Center before being transferred to a Portland hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the pickup, 31-year-old Antonio Sanchez-Guillen, of McMinnville, initially veered onto the southbound shoulder before driving into northbound traffic, Hove said. Police do not know what caused Sanchez-Guillen to lose control of the pickup. He suffered minor injuries.

Highway 99W was closed for about three hours while the crash was investigated.
