Portland woman, 21, may be missing in Gorge, police say

PORTLAND, Ore. – Police are asking for the public’s help with locating a 21-year-old Portland woman who may be missing in the Columbia River Gorge.

Anna Schmidt was reported missing Wednesday but was last seen by her roommate on Sunday, Oct. 16.

Police say Schmidt is a hiker and recently purchased a new tent and backpack. Her car was located in the Columbia River Gorge near Bonneville Dam.

Investigators are concerned she may have gotten lost or injured hiking in the Gorge. Police say there are no signs of foul play.

Schmidt was described as a 5-foot-4, 125-pound white woman with brown hair and brown eyes.

Anyone who may have been hiking in the Gorge over the past few days and recognizes Schmidt should contact Detective Heidi Helwig at heidi.helwig@portlandoregon.gov. Anyone with information about Schmidt's whereabouts should call 911.

The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue team may begin searching the area on Friday, depending on information and conditions.
