PENDLETON, Oregon -- A British Columbia lawyer representing 12 victims in a 2012 charter bus crash on Interstate 84 near Pendleton has filed a lawsuit seeking $700 million.

The East Oregonian reports that the group is seeking a jury trial on accusations that tour operators were negligent. The lawsuit also accuses Oregon and the state Transportation Department of failing to make an icy stretch of the interstate safe and failing to build barriers to keep the bus from going into a steep ravine.

Nine people were killed and 38 more injured when the charter bus crashed last December.

At least one victim, 56-year-old John Choi, was treated for serious injuries at Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise.
