BOISE COUNTY -- The Idaho Transportation Department has closed a 12-mile stretch of Highway 21 between Grandjean Junction and Banner Summit after an avalanche came down on the road last night.
ITD spokesman Reed Hollinshead says snow is covering both lanes of the highway. The slide occurred around 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Due to the recent warm temperatures, ITD had planned to closed highway as an avalanche safety precaution.
The avalanche risk in that area is "considerable," according to forecasters. This is the fifth closure of this section of Highway 21 this avalanche season.
Hollinshead says weather conditions are not favorable and they will likely keep the highway closed today and reevaluate conditions Thursday morning.
