BOISE -- Teachers who signed contracts in years when the Students Come First laws were in effect could be bound by certain provisions of those repealed laws under a bill advanced by a Senate panel.

The Senate Education Committee approved a measure Tuesday that requires teachers who signed contracts in 2012 to continue operating under terms of those agreements. The measure keeps in place some details that were overturned by voters last fall.

Department of Education Deputy Chief of Staff Jason Hancock said it would clarify any ambiguity and prevent possible lawsuits between districts and teachers.

But the Idaho Education Association teachers union said preserving portions of the ballot measures disrespects the will of the voters.

The bill has already passed the House and now moves to the Senate floor.
