COEUR D’ALENE -- Police are looking for two men accused of holding a man at knife point and then stealing his van as he ran away.
The victim told officers he agreed to give the suspects a ride to a home on 7th Street just before 2 p.m. on Sunday.
The suspects are acquaintances of the victim, police said.
Officers said one of the passengers, 20-year-old Christopher Bennett, was riding in the back seat of the car when he handed the victim a ring box and told him he was going to pawn the ring. The victim opened the box and remarked it was empty.
Police said Bennett accused the victim of stealing his ring, then reached forward and held a knife blade against his throat.
The victim’s fingers were cut as he wrestled the knife away.
Police said another passenger in the back seat leaned forward and threatened the victim with another knife.
The victim said he jumped out the driver’s door and scrambled to the sidewalk.
Three other passengers jumped out of the van and ran off.
When the van was empty, police said Bennett jumped into the driver seat and the passenger got into the passenger seat and drove off in the victim’s van.
Five minutes later, officers located the victim’s van. Both suspects had abandoned the vehicle.
The second suspect is described as a white man with curly brown hair, in his mid- 20s. He was wearing a dark-colored baseball hat sideways.
Bennett has an active warrant for a previous charge of reckless driving.
Anyone with information about the crime is asked to call Coeur d’Alene Police.
