CALDWELL -- A Caldwell hair salon in pieces after it was hit by a pickup truck around 1:40 a.m. Sunday.
It happened at His & Hers Hair Shop at 415 N. 10th Avenue near Paul's Market.
Caldwell Police Capt. Frank Wyant says 38-year-old Edelfo Galvez Velasquez has been arrested in connection with the crash. He is charged with leaving the scene of an accident, providing false information to officers, failure to purchase a driver's license and a citation for no insurance.
It appears that Velasquez may be in the U.S. illegally, and Wyant says he is under an immigration hold.
Witnesses told police that Velasquez was northbound on 10th Avenue when he began revving his truck and speeding to try and spin out. He then lost control, crossed oncoming lanes and rammed the building.
When officers arrived they found Velasquez and a male passenger at the crash scene. The truck was inside the building. Wyant says Velasquez initially gave a false name and ID to officers. While police were attending to the accident scene, Velasquez walked away and left the area. He was arrested without incident Monday afternoon at a residence in Caldwell.
Salon operator Alfredo Valenzuela says the business has been there for over 40 years and is a landmark in Caldwell.
"We lost something we love, and I think Caldwell also," said Valenzuela.
The business is completely destroyed, but Valenzuela says they plan to rebuild.
Wyant estimates the damage to the building to be about $40,000 to $50,000.
