POCATELLO, Idaho -- Bannock County authorities say a man who confessed to killing his girlfriend and then pulled a gun on detectives who were questioning him died several hours later in a shootout with a SWAT team.

The nine officers who fired shots at Boede Paul have all been placed on administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.

Sheriff Lorin Nielsen said Paul called the sheriff's office Wednesday asking to meet with detectives about the Jan. 6 disappearance of 23-year-old Angelea Schultz of Pocatello.

Nielsen said the standoff began when Paul pulled a gun as he sat in his pickup.

At about 7 p.m., Paul got out of his pickup and started shooting. Officers returned fire. Paul died at the scene. His age and hometown were not immediately released.

Nielsen said Paul indicated roughly where he buried Schultz's body and officers were searching that location Thursday.
