DAYTON, Idaho -- The driver of a dump truck has died after running into a train shortly after 10 a.m. Wednesday just west of Preston.

Reports indicate the driver was operating a Franklin County dump truck, and was traveling eastbound on State Highway 36 near milepost 127 when the crash happened.

The Idaho State Police report the driver, whose identity hasn't been released, hit the train so hard that several cars were knocked off the tracks, and the tracks were damaged.

Heavy fog in the area is said to be a contributing factor.

The driver reportedly died at the scene.

Officers say it appears that the railway crossing will be closed for at least a day while crews clean up the accident scene.

"Right now we're working on a detour plan," said ISP Captain Eric Dayley.

Dayley says both lanes of State Highway 36 are blocked at this time, and the investigation is continuing.
