MERIDIAN -- Firefighters helped a homeowner fight an eight-acre grass fire near the intersection of East Pine Road and Locust Grove Road, directly across from the Crossroads Middle School in Meridian.

Meridian Fire Department Division Chief Tyler Rountree says the homeowner was mowing weeds when he hit a rock, causing sparks.

"It's really dry right now," said Rountree.  "It kind of came quick but the fuels are ready to burn. The 4th of July is coming upon us and this is just a precursor to what, hopefully everybody takes warning that it's really dry and everybody needs to be careful."

The fire was reported around 3:15 p.m. Monday, and extinguished about a half hour later.

Rountree says the wind direction and green grass helped keep the fire from destroying any homes or buildings.
