TWIN FALLS -- Authorities say a man found dead after his car plunged into the Snake River Canyon Friday night took his own life.

Jerome County Sheriff Doug McFall says witnesses saw Lee Bennett Jr. pull his car up to the edge of the canyon on private property in Jerome.  Bennett got out the car to remove rocks in his path, then got back inside and drove off the rim.

The Jerome County coroner has ruled the death a suicide.

McFall says family members told investigators that the 50-year-old had been out of work and living in his vehicle and appeared to be very despondent prior to his death.

Twin Falls Crane Service removed the vehicle from the canyon with the man still inside.

The Jerome County sheriff was assisted in their investigation by the Jerome County coroner, the Jerome Rural Fire Department, Jerome County Paramedics and Idaho State Police.
