LEWISTON, Idaho--Investigators in Lewiston, Idaho are trying to track down whoever is stealing storm drains right off city streets.

So far, 8 of the cast iron storms drains have been stolen at a total replacement cost of $2,000.

Police say the thefts not only pose a financial problem but could also potentially cause harm to pedestrians and bike riders.

Authorities don’t know who is behind the thefts, but they believe their plan is to sell the cast iron grates to metal recycling plants.  None have turned up at any of the local plants so far.

The thefts have been going on for about three weeks in the downtown Lewiston area.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Lewiston Police Department.
