CALDWELL -- A 72-year-old man is behind bars after prosecutors say he sexually assaulted a young girl in his care.
Ross White appeared in a Canyon County court Tuesday. He is charged with felony lewd conduct with a minor. White and his wife operated a daycare at a couple of different locations in Nampa.
Police report a female victim, now 13 years old, came forward and said the abuse happened between 2007 and 2009.
White did not enter a plea Tuesday.
According to a Nampa Police report, White inappropriately touched the victim when she was between seven and nine years old.
Canyon County Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Erica Kallin is wondering if other victims are out there because White operated a daycare. She wants parents to be vigilant about this case and the issue.
“There is obviously a concern when you are dealing with young children because either they don’t know the touching is bad, or they don’t understand the touching is happening,” said Kallin.
“We want to make sure that parents are aware and make sure that they understand that this is something that did happen and really just get the information out there,” she said.
During his court appearance Tuesday, White told the judge he could not afford an attorney.
The state recommended bail be set at $500,000, but attorneys said because of the many medications White is taking he will need medical care in the jail.
His bail was ultimately set at $250,000. The judge believes White is low risk for fleeing, he also ordered a no contact order for White, for any children under the age of 18.
White told the judge he and his wife have two daughters and five grandchildren.
White is scheduled to appear in court again on Oct. 19.
If he is found guilty of the felony charge, he could face up to life in prison.
