COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho - The Coeur d'Alene School District, Coeur d'Alene Christian School, Lake City Junior Academy, LAM Christian Academy (Lutheran Academy of the Master), the Lakeland School District in Rathdrum and the Post Falls School District have cancelled classes for all schools for Friday, December 21 due to “anxiety and fear among students from a threat not believed to be credible.”
Coeur d'Alene District spokeswoman Laura Rumpler told KREM 2 News that there was no specific threat to any particular school, but a vague rumor circulating about a “possible school shooting” was causing so much fear for students and parents that the district decided to cancel classes at all of its schools Friday.
The District will make up the missed day on Feb. 15th.
The Post Falls School District made the same decision for the same reason shortly after Coeur d'Alene announced its decision at 4:20 p.m. Thursday.
Other districts and schools followed, Coeur d'Alene Christian School, Lake City Junior Academy and the Lakeland School District informed KREM 2 News of their decision to close.
Here is the full statement sent to KREM 2 News from the Coeur d'Alene School District:
Coeur d’Alene School District Officials have decided to CANCEL school pre K-12 across the entire system for Friday, December 21st – including before school and after school activities. Even though the school district and local law enforcement have NOT isolated a credible threat to the rumors circulating about a possible school shooting on Friday, the district has decided, with advice from law enforcement, that the ability to have a productive and calm day of school has been compromised.
The depth and breadth of anxiety and fear has spread throughout the community, beyond the 17 school campuses of SD271. Local law enforcement agencies are working across our communities to create a sense of reassurance. SD 271 is a complex school system with 17 school campuses spread across 5 municipalities.
Student and staff safety is our district’s number one concern as we head into the holiday break.
The district also recognizes that student-initiated rumors can be a tactic to avoid school so the cancellation of school on December 21st will be made up with school in session on Friday, February 15th (a previously identified no school day.)
School Plus will follow its regular snow day closure site consolidation plan with enhanced security.
