SEATTLE – Free mammograms are being offered Saturday in Seattle, and there were still plenty of open appointments available as of Friday afternoon.

The Seattle Cancer Care Alliance is offering 55 free breast cancer screenings to women who don't have insurance and meet the qualifications. In order to qualify for a free mammogram, a women must meet the following requirements:

  • Be symptom free
  • Be between 40 and 64 years old
  • Have no health insurance
  • Have a primary care physician to whom SCCA can send the mammogram report

The screenings will be held at the Ballard Safeway, 1423 Market St. The SCCA's mobile "mammovan" will be parked there from 8:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Reservations can be made by calling 206-288-7800. The line is staffed through 6 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to noon Saturday.

If all of the appointments for Saturday are not booked in advance, SCCA will take walk-up appointments on Saturday as well. As of noon Friday, only four of the 55 open appointments had been filled.

There will be more free mammogram clinics through the end of June. No announcements have been made yet on when and where they will be.

The free mammograms are made possible in part by a grant from the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
