The University of Washington is turning to crowdfunding to help support a STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) program for children at the Tacoma campus.
Math Science Leadership Program is a free summer instructional camp for 7th through 12th graders. Students work with UW faculty on a variety of topics, including ecoscience, video game design and cybersecuritiy.
Nearly all of the youth served are either female, potential first generation college students or racial and ethnic minorities. The goal is to empower these students who are historically underrepresented in the sciences with the tools and inspiration to pursue careers in STEM fields.
In less than a week, the crowdfunding project raised nearly half of the $10,000 goal.
You can see the impact of each donation level. For example, $5 gives a student a healthy breakfast, $25 gives lap equipment and $500 gives the cost of chartering a bus and hiring a driver for a field trip.
There is a $5 gift minimum.
