Video: Port Angeles woman recalls getting pregnant after being pregnant

An Arkansas woman got pregnant after she was already pregnant.

It rarely happens, but a Port Angeles woman says it happened to her.

Twenty-one years ago, Shawna Peterson gave birth to triplets: identical boys Alan and Joe - all blond and blue-eyed, and Danny - brunette with hazel eyes.

When Shawna asked doctors to explain, she had a shock.

"Every doctor I talked to said you got pregnant at two different times," she said.

Doctors say it is rare, but it does happen. It's a phenomenon called superfetation - conceiving while pregnant.

It means a second egg is being fertilized after a pregnancy has already begun, and this results in two fetuses of different ages in the uterus at the same time.

Doctors say it's possible because some women ovulate more than once a month.

Shawna is closely following the story of an Arkansas couple that doctors say is expecting a boy and a girl, conceived about two-and-a-half weeks apart.

Some remain skeptical about Julia Grovenburg's double pregnancy, but not Shawna. She says she has all the proof she needs.
