Near Vantage - Grant County Public Utility District workers have successfully extended fish ladders in time to help migrating spring chinook salmon get upstream to spawn.
On Tuesday, State Fish & Wildlife managers announced they were rapidly throwing together a plan to capture the federally protected salmon at a downstream dam and truck them around the Wanapum Dam where water levels have been dramatically reduced. Grant County PUD lowered the levels after a large fracture was discovered near the dam’s spillway.
Experts are still trying to figure out what caused the crack before they begin to repair it which may mean the water levels will remain low for several weeks. Workers quickly extended the dam’s main fish ladder to reach the receded river and say they are about to complete an extension of the secondary ladder.
