CHENEY, Wash. – You may have heard of sanctuary cities, but what about a sanctuary campus?
A sanctuary campus is a term that holds different meanings at different universities.
Recently, a sanctuary petition was drawn up by Eastern Washington University faculty, staff and students. So far, it has received 400 signatures.
The petition calls on the Board of Trustees to make the university a campus that limits cooperation with federal immigration authorities. It asks them not to release information on students’ immigration status. Those petitioning hope to prevent university police forces from teaming up with the feds in deportation raids.
KREM 2 reached out to EWU for comment. A spokesperson became aware of the petition on Thursday and did not have any comment on how the university could become a sanctuary campus, if at all.
EWU’s president, Mary Cullinan, addressed students a student unity gathering earlier in the week. She said she is committed to supporting students in every way possible and upholding the university’s long-standing values, which includes creating an inclusive, safe campus environment
