Two California officers killed while trying to resolve family dispute

The police chief of Palm Springs, California, says two officers have died and another is wounded after being shot at a home where they were responding to a report of a domestic disturbance.

Police Chief Bryan Reyes says the officers were talking calmly to a man at the house, trying to resolve the situation, when he opened fire on the officers Saturday afternoon. Reyes says gunshots killed officers Jose Gilbert Vega and Lesley Zerebny.

Vega, a father of eight, was a 35-year veteran of the Palm Springs Police Dept., and was scheduled to retire in December. Zerebny was 27 years old. She was the mother of a four-month old girl, and had recently returned to duty from maternity leave.

Reyes says the wounded officer is alert and doing well.

SWAT officers raced to the scene after the shooting, but no one has been arrested. They have surrounded the home where the shooting took place, and believe the killer may still be inside.
