LACEY -- Police in Lacey recently used social media and a smart doorbell to catch a suspect who tried to get into someone's house.
David McDonell woke up to find an alert on his phone. He tapped on it and opened a video, recorded a few hours earlier, showing a man trying to get into his front door.
“It was very disturbing, to say the least, waking up to see some guy trying to pick the lock,” said McDonell.
McDonell probably would not have known about the attempted break-in had he not installed a smart doorbell called Ring, which records video anytime someone approaches, even if they don’t press the button.
McDonell handed his clip over to Lacey police, who tweeted the video and posted it on Facebook. Within hours they had a solid lead.
“By two or three o'clock that day was when we got the phone call that they picked him up,” McDonell said.
“They were just stunned by how clear the video quality was and how a tool like this led to the arrest of a perpetrator,” he said.
