Ore. man allegedly attacks girlfriend, witness, fire truck

LYONS, Ore. -- A Lyons man was arrested Sunday night after he allegedly punched a woman after a car crash, attacked a witness, fled the scene of the crash and punched a fire truck near Highway 22, officials said.

Canon Richmond, 23, of Lyons, was arrested on accusations of assault, reckless endangerment and criminal mischief after the incident.

A probable cause statement filed in Marion County gave this account:

Marion County deputies responded to reports of car crash on the 23500 block of Santiam Way SE. When they arrived at the scene, Stayton fire crews said they thought a man involved in the crash had run from the scene.

Deputies interviewed an injured man on a gurney near the crash site. He said he heard a crash, came outside and saw a man, later identified as Richmond, punch a woman in the head. The witness yelled at Richmond, who then began attacking him. The man said Richmond punched him in the head, kneed him in the neck and seriously injured his neck.

Deputies were unable to interview the woman as she was being loaded into an ambulance, but she later denied being assaulted by Richmond. She likely suffered a head injury during the crash, deputies said. A head-size bulge was found on the windshield of the vehicle's passenger side.

A nearby neighbor told deputies she saw a man running through her yard away from the crash. Deputies followed her directions to a road and found two firefighters struggling with Richmond.

According to the firefighters, Richmond jumped on the side of their fire truck while they were driving toward Highway 22. He started punching the truck and tried climbing through the driver's side window. When Richmond managed to pull his upper body into the truck, the driver struggled to both control the vehicle and fight him off.

After driver slammed on the brakes, a firefighter jumped out of the truck and pulled Richmond off the vehicle. Richmond was restrained, taken to Marion County jail and held on $35,000 bail. His next court appearance is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Nov. 1.
