One man dies after officer-involved shooting near the Jungle

Chris Daniels reports

SEATTLE – One man died following an officer-involved shooting near the Jungle homeless encampment Tuesday.

Seattle police were in the area assisting with the Jungle cleanup when two officers witnessed an altercation near Airport Way S and S Bayview Street in SoDo shortly before 12:45 p.m.

Two men were fighting when one man wielded a knife. The officers intervened, and one officer fired their weapon.

Both men were transported to Harborview Medical Center, and the man who was shot by the police officer died several hours later. The man with a knife wound sustained non-life threatening injuries.

The officer who fired their gun was placed on administrative leave.

Seattle Police Chief Kathleen O’Toole said the altercation was not directly related to the Jungle cleanup, and it is not known if the men were residents of the Jungle.

“I think it underscores the danger in this particular area,” O’Toole said. “Hopefully the officers prevented something more serious happening in this instance.”
