Grave robbers steal WWII veteran's skull

Grave robbers stole a World War II veteran's skull and the family wants answers.

HICKORY, N.C. -- A new push from a local family after grave robbers not only vandalized a World War II Veterans mausoleum but stole his skull.

This unthinkable crime happened six months ago. Now the family wants answers.

"It just blows my mind you have enough chops to come in here bust that open in the middle of the night, pull the casket out and the worst part chopping the guys head off," said Don Lowe, James William Floyd's son-in-law.

That's the haunting memory Lowe is forced to live with.  His dad who is a decorated war vet was laid to rest next to his wife back in 2008.

In March, grave robbers did the unthinkable.

"When you get that call and police are telling you this happened," said Lowe. "It's unreal."

Over the last six months, his father's grave has been empty. Two to three times a week Don drives past it. What's supposed to be a place of peace and quiet reflection has been anything but. That's why Don is taking action.

He's offering $5,000 for any information that may lead to an arrest.

"I think it's Satanists," said Lowe. "Now that sounds funny especially around here, but this isn't a school-boy prank that says I'm going to jazz up the graveyard a little bit. No, they broke that. They broke the marble pulled him out and sawed his head off."
