Caldwell officers who shot burglary, drive-by suspect identified

CALDWELL - Nampa police on Thursday identified the two Caldwell police officers who were directly involved in the shooting of a fugitive November 11 in Caldwell.

The two officers are:

- Jared Hoeksema, a specialist assigned to patrol. He has five years of experience with the department.

- Adam Matthews, a corporal assigned to patrol. He has 10 years of experience with the department.

Hoeksema and Matthews shot 24-year-old James Stell after an hours-long manhunt that ensued after after a neighbor reported seeing a man trying to break into a home. The burglary happened in the 600 block of Hazel Street at about 5:30 a.m., according to police.

Hoeksema and Matthews shot Stell as he left a house near Marshall Avenue and Elm Street.

Nampa police are leading the continuing Canyon County Critical Incident Task Force investigation. That investigation has found that one officer fired bean bag rounds and the other fired a rifle while Stell was holding a handgun.

Stell was taken to a local hospital for treatment and then booked into the Canyon County Jail.

Neither officer was injured.

Parma police later said Stell is also the suspect in a drive-by shooting that happened November 8.
