United Airlines this month started charging $100 for the second checked bag to some international destinations, including the Middle East.  But United does not charge for the first international checked bag. The question is in how you want to look at things - $100 for a bag which usually elicits winces and outrage, or just think of it at $50 each.

Baggage used to fly "free."  But in 2008 carriers started charging $15 to check a bag - a cost that's ramped up to a more typical $25 for the first domestic bag.  Call if fee creep.

At Sea-Tac on Tuesday, two friends were heading to Vancouver for a week of vacation.  Each had similar luggage, and each paid wildly different amounts to get it to Seattle.

Marlys Parr flew in from Texas on American Airlines and paid a combined $60 for her two checked bags one way. She'll pay another $60 to get them home.

Linda Young flew in from Florida and paid nothing on Southwest Airlines.  Southwest's stragegy is to fill flights by operating more like the old bags fly free days.  That's all helped to turn Young into a devoted Southwest customer.  She considers bag fees on other airlines, "outrageous."
