WASHINGTON (AP) — More than 1 million U.S. workers and over 25,000 businesses are expected to participate in "safety stand-downs" in all 50 states this week to emphasize the importance of workplace safety and guarding against falls, the leading cause of death in the construction industry.
Labor Secretary Thomas Perez says that with the economy on the rebound and the summer construction season getting under way, now is the time to focus on preventing workplace falls.
He says falls are the top cause of death in the construction industry, averaging nearly one per day. Thousands more are injured.
Perez says falls are preventable through planning at the work site and providing proper fall protection and training.
