NEW YORK (AP) — A wine collector convicted of fraud for manufacturing fake vintage wine in his kitchen is asking a New York judge for leniency, saying his actions were foolish.

Rudy Kurniawan's request was filed publicly Thursday in federal court in Manhattan.

Kurniawan was convicted in December of charges that could bring up to 40 years in prison. His sentencing is scheduled for July 17.

The government says Kurniawan made between $8 million and $20 million selling fake vintage wine he made in his Arcadia, California kitchen.

Prosecutors say the money allowed him to live affluently in suburban Los Angeles.

Kurniawan says he has no excuses and what he did was morally and socially wrong. He says he will return to his native Indonesia after he serves his sentence.
