How the Dow Jones industrial average fared Tuesday

Stocks closed higher Tuesday as the market stabilized after a three-day slump. Technology stocks rose after taking a beating over the past week. Utilities also gained as investors bought safe-play stocks. The gain pushed the Standard & Poor's 500 index back into the black for the year.

On Tuesday:

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 10.27 points, or 0.06 percent, to 16,256.14.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index gained 6.92 points, or 0.4 percent, to 1,851.96.

The Nasdaq composite climbed 33.23 points, or 0.8 percent, to close at 4,112.99.

For the week:

The Dow Jones industrial average dropped 156.57 points, or 1 percent.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 13.13 points, or 0.7 percent.

The Nasdaq composite dropped 14.74 points, or 0.4 percent.

For the year:

The Dow Jones industrial average is down 320.52 points, or 1.9 percent.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index is up 3.60 points, or 0.2 percent.

The Nasdaq composite is down 63.60 points, or 1.5 percent.
